How Bad Is That Dent, Really?
Garage door dents happen to just about every homeowner in Central Florida. A stray basketball, a backing-up vehicle, a flying branch during a storm β and suddenly your door has a visible crease that bothers you every time you pull in. The good news: not every dent means a full panel replacement. The bad news: some dents are worse than they look.
Before you decide what to do, you need to assess two things β the depth and location of the dent, and whether the structural integrity of the panel has been compromised. A shallow surface dent on a flat steel panel is a very different repair than a deep crease near the hinge area or a dent that has bent the panel out of its track.
Common Causes of Garage Door Dents in Florida
Central Florida homeowners deal with a few dent-causing scenarios that are more common here than in other parts of the country:
- Storm debris: Hurricane season runs June through November. High winds throw branches, lawn furniture, and debris at garage doors regularly.
- Backing out accidents: Most residential garage dents happen when a vehicle clips the door while it is in motion β or when the driver misjudges clearance backing in.
- Basketball and sports: Driveways double as courts in many Florida neighborhoods. Repeated ball impacts cause progressive dents over time.
- Heat expansion: Florida's intense summer heat causes steel panels to expand. On older doors, this can amplify existing stress points and create warping that looks like denting.
Can You DIY a Garage Door Dent?
For shallow, cosmetic dents on flat steel panels, a few DIY methods do work β with the right tools and expectations.
The aluminum foil and heat method is the most common DIY approach. You tape a piece of aluminum foil over the dent, apply heat from a heat gun or hair dryer for about 60 seconds, then quickly spray compressed air (held upside down) on the same spot. The rapid temperature change can cause the metal to pop back into shape. This works reasonably well on small, round dents that have not creased the metal.
Rubber mallet tapping works from the inside of the panel for dents that pushed the panel inward. Gentle tapping with a rubber mallet β not a steel hammer β can gradually work out shallow damage without cracking paint or marring the surface.
What does not work: plungers, suction cups designed for cars, or aggressive hammering. Garage door steel is thinner than automotive steel, and the wrong approach will make the damage worse.
When a Dent Needs a Professional
Not all dents are DIY-friendly. Call a professional from Classic Garage Doors when:
- The dent is deep enough to crease or fold the metal. A crease means the steel fibers have broken β no amount of pushing from the inside will fully restore it.
- The door is no longer operating smoothly. If a dent is causing the panel to bind in the track, operate loudly, or fail to seal against the weatherstrip, the panel is affecting function β not just appearance.
- The dent is on a panel with a window insert. Damaged panels with glass require careful removal to avoid breakage.
- Your door is insulated. Two-layer and three-layer insulated panels have foam cores that compress when dented. The outer skin may look repairable, but the insulation layer is permanently compromised.
- The damage is near the bottom panel. Bottom panels are frequently hit by vehicles and take more structural stress than upper panels. They also interact with the floor seal β a bent bottom panel almost always needs professional attention.
Panel Replacement vs. Full Door Replacement
If the damage requires more than a DIY fix, you are looking at one of two professional options: replace the individual panel, or replace the entire door.
Individual panel replacement makes sense when your door is relatively new, the other panels are in good shape, and the replacement panel is still available from the manufacturer. Most garage door panels are available for 5-10 years after initial installation, but matching an older door gets harder every year. An installation professional can assess whether a panel match is possible and what it will cost.
Full door replacement is usually the better investment when your door is 10 or more years old, multiple panels are damaged or faded, or the replacement panel cost approaches 50% of a new door's price. In Central Florida, a new single-car garage door installed starts in the $700-$1,200 range depending on material, insulation, and style. For that investment, you get a door under warranty with modern hardware β often a better long-term decision than patching an aging door.
