Here's what's going on and what to do about it.
What Causes a Garage Door to Keep Reversing?
Modern garage doors are equipped with safety systems designed to prevent the door from crushing objects β or people β in its path. When these systems detect a problem, they reverse the door automatically. That safety feature is a good thing. The challenge is figuring out why it's triggering when it shouldn't.
The most common causes in Florida homes include:
- Misaligned safety sensors β The two photo-eye sensors near the bottom of the door track send an invisible beam across the opening. If anything breaks that beam β or if the sensors are knocked out of alignment β the door won't close.
- Dirty or obstructed sensor lenses β Florida's humidity, dust, and spider webs can coat the sensor lenses and interrupt the beam even with no physical obstruction.
- Incorrectly set close-force limit β If the opener's down-force setting is too sensitive, the door may reverse when it detects even minor resistance β like the slight pressure of hitting the floor seal.
- Something blocking the door's path β A forgotten toolbox, debris, or a vehicle side mirror can trigger the safety reversal.
- Damaged or worn-out rollers and tracks β If the door binds or catches as it closes, the opener senses resistance and reverses.
- Broken or unbalanced springs β Springs that are failing may cause uneven resistance, triggering a reversal even when the path is clear.
How to Troubleshoot a Reversing Garage Door β Step by Step
Before calling a professional, try these checks in order. Most can be done in under 10 minutes.
Step 1: Check for physical obstructions. Walk the full perimeter of the door opening. Remove anything within 6 inches of the door's path. Sometimes the fix is this simple.
Step 2: Inspect the safety sensors. Look at both sensors near the bottom of the tracks β they should both have a solid (not blinking) indicator light. If one is blinking, it's not receiving the beam. Gently loosen the wing nut or screw holding the sensor, realign it so both lenses point directly at each other, and retighten. Both lights should go solid green or amber-and-green depending on your opener brand.
Step 3: Clean the sensor lenses. Use a dry cloth or a cotton swab to wipe both lenses. St. Cloud's humidity means sensors get coated faster than homeowners expect β this step alone fixes the issue surprisingly often.
Step 4: Adjust the down-force / close-limit settings. Consult your opener's manual or the label on the opener unit. Most chain-drive and belt-drive openers have a dial or digital setting for down-force sensitivity. Increase it slightly (typically one turn clockwise on the screw labeled "Force" or "Down-Force") and test the door. Repeat until the door closes fully without reversing. Don't over-tighten β the safety reversal is there for a reason.
Step 5: Test the manual balance. Pull the red emergency cord to disconnect the door from the opener, then manually lift the door to about halfway. Let go. A properly balanced door stays in place or drifts only slightly. If it slams down or shoots up, the springs are out of balance β stop here and call a professional. Never attempt spring adjustments yourself; garage door springs are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury.

Florida-Specific Issues That Make Reversals More Common
Central Florida's climate creates a few conditions that make this problem more frequent here than in other parts of the country.
Humidity warps wooden components. If you have a wood-paneled door or a wood frame, humidity can cause the panels to swell slightly, adding resistance as the door closes β enough to trigger a reversal on a sensitive opener. This is most common during summer rainy season (JuneβSeptember).
Heat expands metal tracks and hardware. On extremely hot afternoons (and we see plenty of those in Osceola and Orange counties), metal tracks can expand slightly, causing the door to bind at certain points. If your door only reverses during the hottest part of the afternoon but works fine in the morning, this may be the cause.
Debris from summer storms. After heavy rain or wind, leaves, small branches, and sand can collect inside the track or get caught under the door seal. Always inspect your garage door and opening after any significant weather event.
